Carrier Oils (fixed oils)

Carrier Oils (fixed oils) are used in Aromatherapy to transport essential oils into the body. The most common method is through Aromatherapy massage.

Definition of a carrier oil

A carrier oil is a fixed (unrefined) vegetable oil. Carrier oils are often produced by cold pressing, whilst specialised oils are produced by maceration. All carrier oils have a vast number of therapeutic benefits and can be used alone.

Grapeseed (Vitis vinifera)

The most commonly economical carrier oil is Grapeseed. This is rich in Oleic acid and can help balance blood pressure.

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus)

A perfect oil for massage which contains vitamins such as ABCDE and K. Sunflower has a proliferate effect on the skin (preventative properties). Used in massage Sunflower leaves a satin feel on the skin after massage. It is ideal for sports people.

Sweet Almond (Prunus dulcis)

Sweet Almond is a rich nourishing oil commonly used in Aromatherapy. Extremely soothing for dry chapped skin and additionally, a favourite for nappy rash in babies.

Sweet almond works most effectively when used in a 20%- 80% dilution with another carrier oil, Grapeseed or Sunflower. the dilution helps with absorption.

Calendula ( Calendula officinalis) and Hypericum

(Hypericum perforatum)

Macerated oils include Calendula and Hypericum- these again are best used as a 10 or 15 % dilution with another carrier oil. These are specialist oils which have powerful healing properties.
