Bergamot, Citrus Aurantium V Bergamina originated in South Asia, although cultivated in Bergamo, in Southern Italy.

An important ingredient  in many perfumes, Bergamot has a deliciously uplifting citrus aroma. Moreover it holds a wide range of uses.

The rind is mechanically cold pressed which thus creates Bergamot oil.

 Properties: 

  • Skin complaints:  Psoriasis, acne, eczema and seborrhea of the scalp.
  • Digestion:  Loss of appetite.  For compulsive eating disorders and as an anti-spasmodic for the stomach.
  • Respiratory: for Bronchitis  (when blended with lemon).

Mind and Emotions: 

Uplifting:  Convalescence, anxiety and depression.  Calming and helps insomnia.

The House

  • Air freshener: An uplifting oil, not to be confused with a stimulant.
  • Kills the germs in the air when used in a burner or to kill germs in the kitchen in washing up water.
  • Used in Earl Grey tea, which is renowned for its uplifting properties.

Chemical Properties

Bergamot is a photo sensitiser, increasing the reactions to sun light – contains coumarins.

It is composed of approximately 40% esthers and 50% alcohols,  more than any other citrus oils.

Bergamot should not be used when going into sunlight and should never be used neat on the skin, except under instruction for a cold sore.
