Anise Star Illicium Verum is as Star anise or aniseed. In Latin- (Pimpinella anisum). This herb belongs to the Apiaceae family.
Originally from Asia, and now grown in the Mediterranean countries. In ancient Rome, anise was often added (together with cumin and fennel) to a cake eaten after meals The Egyptians used the Anise to flavour breads. The Romans introduced Anise alongside Fennel and many other plants to Europe.
Similarly early settlers introduced Star Anise to North America. Primarily, Anise was used to promote digestive health.
