Petitgrain Citrus Aurantium Var. Amara Essential oil – Petitgrain from the ‘bitter orange tree,’ from (Rutaceae) family has a long history of use in perfumery and for its many health benefits. Two other oils are produced by this tree “Bergamot” from the fruit and “Neroli” is produced from the petals of the blossom. Traditionally these oils were used frequently in folk medicine all around the world. Petitgrain oil is made by distilling the leaves and twigs of the Bitter Orange tree, and is chemically similar to floral or herb essential oils.
Bitter orange originated in South Asia, South America, China, Haiti, Italy and Mexico all made tinctures and decoctions of the leaves, and used them internally for their tonic effect on the digestive system. The oil reached the Mediterranean by the Moors and the Crusaders, and by the end of the 12th century it was cultivated in Seville, Spain.
Petigrain’s aroma is a refreshing combination of citrus, floral, and slightly woody scents. Used extensively in the perfume and cosmetics industries, as well as in food and beverages as a flavouring agent
