Borage Borago officinalis originates in the Middle East although now, widely grown throughout the world.

A plant known for it’s Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content. A type of Omega 6 fatty acid found in certain vegetable oils, beneficial to the body by reducing the level of inflammatory proteins, known as cytokines. Cytokines are essential for triggering inflammation, a natural immune response to fight infection whilst healing injuries.  When cytokine levels remain persistent in conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, and other chronic disorders, inflammation can cause progressive damage to cells and tissues.  GLA is a also a precursor of prostaglandin, which also prevents or treating certain diseases whilst working with other drugs to alleviate symptoms.

Prostaglandins are found in almost every tissue in humans and animals.

Properties and effects

  • Borage oil is the richest source of GLA currently available at 16-23% (evening primrose contains much less, about 9%).
  • The fatty acids components of borage oil help to prevent wrinkled skin.
  • Excellent choice for a facial treatment oil or lotion.
  • Borage is a non- irritant oil and hence useful for sensitive skin
GLA can also be found in significant quantities in oats, barley, spirulina, and hemp seeds.
