Stroke Patients helped through Complementary Therapies

Stroke patients can gain considerable benefits through Complementary Therapies including Reflexology, Reiki and Aromatherapy.

Additionally new findings suggest that Low level laser therapy is extremely effective.

Aromatherapy Massage

• Aromatherapy massage will help by reducing blood pressure and heart rate. The Essential oils  used work on both a physical and emotional level. Pain and discomfort is relieved whilst enjoying a relaxing massage. Specifically chosen anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-spasmodic essential oils are mixed in a carrier oil, and enter the bloodstream via the skin.  Additionally oils will enter the body through inhalation used in a bath. Massage helps considerably with stiffness and lack of mobility whilst increasing circulation.

Reflexology

• Reflexology (treatment to the feet) beginning with a pre-massage with oils. The therapist will identify imbalances through reflex points on the feet. These imbalances or blockages are treated, by applying gentle pressure with the thumb or finger on the foot.  The reflexes transfer messages to the nervous system, leading to the release of chemicals to reduce pain.

Reiki

• Reiki is a Japanese word meaning “universal energy”
• The therapist acts as a channel for energy to the client.
• Through sickness or emotional upset, a clients’s life force energy will become imbalanced.
• Hospices and psychiatric wards accept the use of Reiki healing.

Low Level Laser therapy

• Low level laser laser therapy involves photo biomodulation.

• Scientific literature documents the effects of photo biostimulation.

New research 

• De Taboada and Oron suggest that laser treatment performed within 24 hours of the stroke onset can improve the outcome.
• “Currently, the putative mechanism for infrared laser therapy in stroke involves the stimulation of mitochondria, which leads to preservation of tissue in the ischemic penumbra and enhanced neuro recovery wards.”
