Elemi comes from an Arabic phrase “above and below” and the word “chryros” meaning “gold.

The essential oil has a woody, balsamic aroma, with a spicy and fresh lemon nuance.

The oil is produced from trees which are native to the Philippines and found elsewhere in India, South and Central America and Africa.

The Elemi ‘oleoresin’ is a resin found inside the bark, and is mainly produced in the rainy season. The Elemi tree is related to frankincense, myrrh and opoponax, which all belong to the Burseraceae family.

As with Frankincense the tree is cut or tapped with deep incisions which allow the oleoresinade to be released. After it is collected, the oleoresin is cleaned to remove any bark, it is then steam distilled to produce 15% to 25% of elemi essential oil. . Elemi resinoid can also be produced by the solvent extraction method.

The oil was then introduced to Europe in the 16th century and used to treat ulcers and skin conditions. Doctors in the 17th Century found Elemi useful in treating head wounds and deep gashes,  it was found to speed up healing.

Properties : antiseptic, analgesic, expectorant, stimulant, and tonic substance.

Elemi oil clears congestion and makes breathing easier by clearing  blocked sinuses,

The oil also helps with joint pain due to its analgesic effect.

It stimulates  body functions – circulation, the secretion of hormones, increase in the the discharge of bile and other gastric juices into the stomach. Stimulating the neurons in the brain, as well as the heartbeat, respiration, peristaltic motion of the intestines, and menstrual flow.

The oil encourages the release of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone which promote the secretion of milk in the breast.

Tonic: A tonic is is something that tones up the whole body.
