Olive oil (Olea Europa) used in aromatherapy should always be specified as cold pressed, first or “virgin” pressing. Extra virgin ‘cold pressed’ olive oil used for culinary purposes in cooking and in salads. Olive oil possesses a viscous texture and very distinctive smell.  Aromatherapists mainly add Olive oil to skin and hair care products.

Properties and effects:

• It has the properties of being calming and emollient.
• The characteristic odour is not always acceptable to the client or the therapist and can overpower the essential oils.
• Use 10% in a blend.

Carrier Oils for Aromatherapy & Massage by Len Price mentions that Olive Oil can cause sensitivity or allergic reactions in some individuals.

Borage Borago officinalis originates in the Middle East although now, widely grown throughout the world.

A plant known for it’s Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content. A type of Omega 6 fatty acid found in certain vegetable oils, beneficial to the body by reducing the level of inflammatory proteins, known as cytokines. Cytokines are essential for triggering inflammation, a natural immune response to fight infection whilst healing injuries.  When cytokine levels remain persistent in conditions such as obesity, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, and other chronic disorders, inflammation can cause progressive damage to cells and tissues.  GLA is a also a precursor of prostaglandin, which also prevents or treating certain diseases whilst working with other drugs to alleviate symptoms.

Prostaglandins are found in almost every tissue in humans and animals.

• Borage oil is the richest source of GLA currently available at 16-23% (evening primrose contains much less, about 9%).
• The fatty acids components of borage oil help to prevent wrinkled skin.

The oil from the macadamia nut, grown in new South Wales and Queensland. It is high in palmitoleic acid (18-25%), a monounsaturated fatty acid that does not occur in any other plant oil but is found in sebum. Fairly stable, the unrefined oil is a soft golden colour with a lovely texture and “feel” to it and has a hint of an aroma (the refined oil is pale yellow and has no smell).

Properties and effects:

• Palmitoleic acid in sebum diminishes progressively as we get older and macadamia oil may help replenish this in older skin.
• Highly emollient and has anti-ageing properties.
• Nourishing to a dry and mature skin, it has been found useful in sun preparations.
• It is used in France as an aid against sunburn.

Macadamia is a genus of four species of trees indigenous to Australia, and constituting part of the plant family Proteaceae. They are native to north eastern New South Wales and Central and South eastern Queensland.

Many people call the Rosa Canina the ‘Dog Rose.’ (Canina meaning dog-like) as well as Rosa Rubiginosa, meaning rusty red.

In the 1930’s and 40’s  Rose hips were a main ingredient in a powerful tonic for children.  With extremely high levels of Vitamin C,  Rosehip has a potent anti-aging effect.

Rosehips consist of 70% weight of the fruit.  The process of extraction begins by drying the hips and keeping them in temperatures of under 80 degrees C. This is to avoid degradation.  The next part of the process involves splitting the dried hips to release the seeds. The seeds then enter a grinding process followed by a simple mechanical expression without solvents. This therefore creates a pure organic oil.

“The antioxidant activity of the vitamin C protects and repairs UV-damage and helps to reduce wrinkles,” says Kenneth Howe, M.D., New York City-based dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology. Additionally, the carotenoids, which are vitamin A-like compounds that regulate skin turnover, “lead to a brighter, more even complexion,” says Howe.
